I have had many requests for an inexpensive, no frills drawknife that simply works well. That is a tall order considering the amount of expert attention that is needed to ensure cutting performance and edge retention of any drawknife, and the Budget Bowyer is the best solution I have currently. I take an abysmal box-store product and rework it into a functional, quality tool. Out of the package these tools are absolute junk, but I regrind, re-heattreat, and most importantly, test every single blade to ensure cutting performance and edge retention. They may not get many points for style, but these are stout, capable tools that honestly can outwork many vintage drawknives and will last longer to boot.
Wood species for the handles will vary, but will always be a quality hardwood such as ash, maple, walnut, hickory, black locust, honey locust, cherry, elm, or oak. Whatever the wood species, the two handles of any given tool will come from directly adjacent sections of a single piece of stock. Particular handle species may be available upon request depending upon current stock (contact us for more information).
The video shows typical Budget Bowyer performance cutting dry ash. Drawknives ship razor sharp, ready to work, and include a reusable plastic edge cover.

I’ve acquired quite the collection over the years, and at one point or another have owned every well-known brand of vintage and new production drawknives. After spending some time with Bastionhead’s Budget Bowyer drawknife, I consider it the best I've found under the $150 price point, by far. The razor sharp edge rarely needs touched up, and students in our workshops love the ergonomics. The wide blade gives the knife excellent control, and it’s a real pleasure to use.

I offer a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. If you are unhappy with the tool for any reason, you can return it within the 90-day period and receive a refund of the purchase price and all shipping charges. Of course, this excludes failures or damage caused by mistreatment, such as impact or excessive moisture exposure.
Most drawknives fall into two basic categories, those that are intended to be used with the bevel facing up and those intended to be used with the bevel facing down. Bevel-up drawknives typically are better for working flat or straight areas, for instance removing bark or chamfering corners. Bevel-down drawknives are more suited to contouring work, like shaping axe handles, curvy table legs, or spoons. Perhaps one out of every dozen or so vintage drawknives that I encounter can be used comfortably in either orientation.
